Health Literacy:
The following letter to the editor appeared in the Virginia Gazette on October 20, 2010 and the Daily Press on October 22, 2011:
Health literacy
October is Health Literacy Awareness Month and, according to the AARP, nine out of 10 American adults have some problems with health literacy. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services defines "health literacy" as the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate decisions. When you leave your doctor's appointment, do you understand your diagnosis? Do you have the information you need to address your health issue? The National Patient Safety Foundation encourages patients to "Ask Me 3" questions each time they meet with their health care provider: 1. What is my main problem? 2. What do I need to do? 3. Why is it important for me to do this?
You can print an "Ask Me 3" worksheet at http://www.npsf.org/askme3/pdfs/tips.pdf
Health care providers can go to http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/literacy/ to access a toolkit highlighting clear communication techniques.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITES:
Volunteering and remaining actively engaged in their community provides significant health benefits to seniors. Older adults who volunteer or remain engaged in the workforce more than 100 hours per year are two-thirds less likely to report health problems, even when previous health concerns are taken into account. Not only do these benefits translate into healthier adults, but they can also lead to savings in medical and social services costs. (The Health Benefits of Volunteering: A Review of Recent Research, Corporation for National and Community Service, 2007).
